We needed some more trees for the forest and didn't have a pine yet. So I spent part of March 11th getting this tree completely done for the forest shots.
I started with a Speedtree model Misha created of a pine. From there we needed to bring it down poly count wise to something more manageable and make it feel a like more like a pine tree. From there I exported it and brought it into Maya and manually moved a bunch of branches down to feel more weighted. I tried to UV the tree so that it can be textured manually.
I saw a tree that another group doing a game was working on and I picked their brain on how they did that because doing normal geometry was making really high-poly objects. So I made planes and laid them out to make the leafage. I worked on the textures and making them feel like a tree, nothing quite matched so I color corrected things to match a bit more. There's some variation with the shades of the fronds to feel like there's more fronds.
I finally finished some and gave Heather the one shown in the last image and one tree without fronds. That way the forest can have more variety. The trees largely aren't to be stared at too closely but if need be we can up the quality of the textures and make the planes and their textures fit the tree better.
